My Experience: Farmers embracing organic fertilizer

The high cost of inorganic fertilizer in the country is pushing smallholder farmers to explore other alternatives. Kahua-ini self-help group has embraced production of organic fertilizer using the locally available materials. One of their organic fertilizer is Bokashi, produced using dry bean stalks, animal manure, ash, charcoal dust and virgin soil. Yeast, molasses and wheat bran are added to speed up the decomposition process. The organic fertilizer is ready within 15 days. Farmers are encouraged to embrace the use of organic fertilizer which is beneficial in reducing soil pH as well as regenerating the already degraded soils.

With different stakeholders working together, the process can be more efficient.
